Visit these and other sites, many previously inaccessible or unidentified, with knowledgeable guides of Historical Hikes West Molokai.

The mo'olelo, or storytelling, integrated into these unique hikes brings West Molokai's cultural past alive, offering the most scenic varieties in destinations.

Ranging from 2 to 6 hours, the hikes are offered through the Activities Desk at the Molokai Lodge Cultural Center. The seven hiking trails cobweb the West Molokai countryside from the hills to the seas on this 53,000 acre ranch.



The Historical Hikes-West Molokai hiking program includes the
following scheduled hikes as well as special hikes tailored to the ability and
interests of the visitor.



Novice Hike - $30
2 hours - 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

With just the right mix of exercise and story telling, we invite you to step back in time and let us bring ancient Molokai alive in this two hour walk and talk. We offer you tantalizing slices and tidbits of Molokai's most famous legends, before the area became a ranch.


The hike is about a mile and a half round trip from its starting point at Paniolo Camp with easy rolling pathways.




Advanced Hike - $75
6 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Comfortable long pants, lunch, sun screen and lots of water necessary.

This is our most dramatic offering, starting at Maunaloa and ending at the beach. Taking you from the mountain to the sea your travels unveil one scenic view after another while traversing a 500 year old trail. This six hour, five mile downhill trek includes gulch crossings, long flat stretches, and drops 1,100 feet in two miles. Bring a swim suit for an ocean dip at the bottom of the trail. You will sleep good this night.

The hike begins at Paniolo Camp and ends at Kolo after about a four mile trip over brushy terrain. Bring a swim suit for an ocean dip at the bottom of the trail.





Advanced Hike - $85
6 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Comfortable long pants, lunch, sun screen and lots of water necessary.


This premiere sea cliff hike meanders through the forested groves and grassy knolls before coming to the exhilarating sea cliffs of Molokaišs north coast and its stories. Included within the tour is the ancient Makahiki arena where the Hawaiians of old held their version of the Olympic competitions. Come join us and experience the ancient cilture of Molokai in person.




Novice Hike - $30
2 hours - 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
If you want to exercise your mind, but give your body a respite, this is the perfect activity. This easy paced tour of the ancient Kaupoa fishing village reveals much about the prehistoric seafaring fishermen living next to the beach. Be prepared to relax a bit on this walk and talk.






Advanced Hike - $75
6 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Explore the marine life in the ocean and tide pools along the western shoreline. Tramping through prehistory, you will have numerous opportunities to experience the pristine ocean resources which fed the ancient fishermen and their families.

10 miles west of the Moloka'i Airport in Maunaloa.

Check-in at the Molokai Lodge Cultural Center in Maunaloa Town one hour early.

Bring your own water, sunscreen, backpacks and snacks.

Wear covered shoes (no sandals). Comfortable pants required for advance hikes.

Bring a lunch on the Intermediate and Advanced Hikes.

Intermediate Hike - $50
4 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

One of our finest tours, this four hour walk previews all our hikes that originate from Maunaloa and tells its own mountain top story. One stimulating up and down hill climb rewards you with breathtaking views of Maui, Lanai and on a clear day Oahu. Bring your camera. The hike is about three miles round trip from Paniolo Camp with moderately hilly trails.

Advanced Hike - $75
6 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Comfortable long pants, lunch, sun screen and lots of water necessary.

This is our most legend-packed hike and encompasses the highest concentration of heiau (temples) on Maunaloa. We visit places that have been closed to the public for 100 years. So, not even the guide books know about them ... but you will. This six hour hike offers enough up and down hill stretches to stimulate your body while illuminating the legendary west end of Molokai.

The hike is about five miles round trip from Paniolo Camp.






Intermediate-Advanced Hike - $75
5 hours - 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Comfortable clothing, bring sunscreen, swim wear, bottled water, lunch,
insect repellent.

Halawa Valley is recorded to be the oldest settlement on Molokai, having many ancient stone walls of temples, house sites, and taro (kalo) patches.

Listen to your guides as they bring this ancient history alive in
the many stories they share with you about these archeological
sites you will see along the way to Moaula falls.

The hike is 4.2 miles round trip, with two moderate river crossings.
Climbing over falling trees and branches is always a possibility, especially
after a storm.
